How to upload a Digital Asset

Digital Assets can be uploaded using the graphical user interface or WebDAV. When assets are uploaded, the metadata is extracted and brought into CQ5 DAM. Extracted metadata can be edited.

Uploading a Digital Asset Using the Graphical User Interface

To upload digital assets using the graphical user interface:

1. In the Digital Assets folder (or one of its sub-folders, if applicable), navigate to the location where you want to add digital assets.

2. Click New... and then New File to add digital assets.

/content/docs/en/cq/current/dam/dam_upload_asset/jcr:content/par/image_1/file

3. Click Browse... to locate the file and click Select. You can continue to upload multiple files in various formats, such as images and documents. If you decide that you do not want to upload an asset, click Clear to delete it.

/content/docs/en/cq/current/dam/dam_upload_asset/jcr:content/par/image_0/file

4. Click Upload to upload the selected assets.

Note

You can modify the name before uploading the file by editing the name displayed. This feature is especially useful when an asset of the same name already exists.

In that case, CQ notifies you that an asset of the same name already exists and asks you to click Yes to replace the asset or click No to adjust the name. Click No and you can rename the asset without having to rename the original file on your disk.

Uploading a Digital Asset Using WebDAV

Uploading via WebDAV is often of particular use when uploading a large number of assets.

Note

You can update or delete assets by using the same method as uploading.

To upload a digital asset using WebDAV use the following steps:

  1. Connect to the DAM tab in CQ WCM. Here you can see what is already available:

  2. Connect to the repository using WebDAV (or any equivalent) method. Navigate to the /var/dam folder. Here you can see the same contents as above:

  3. Create any new folders required, and copy your assets into the required location.

In the following example, a new folder demosite is created, and two assets are placed there:

All file creations in the /var/dam structure are automatically detected by the workflow Dam asset syncer and metadata extractor. For each asset the workflow takes the appropriate actions:

    • creates a corresponding dam:Asset node in the /content/dam folder

    • copies the original asset file (for example, About Downloads.pdf) to the new location (for example, /content/dam/demosite/About Downloads.pdf/jcr:content/renditions/original)

    • extracts any available metadata

    • creates thumbnails if possible

  4. If you look at the /content/dam folder in the CRX explorer you can see the new structure, including any metadata and thumbnails that have been generated:

  5. When you return to the DAM tab in CQ, you can now see the assets:

Various key pieces of metadata have already been automatically extracted.
