First Steps for Authors

You are reading the Adobe Experience Manager 5.6.1 version of First Steps for Authors.
This documentation is also available for the following versions: AEM 5.6  CQ 5.5  CQ 5.4  CQ 5.3

This section gives you an overview of the main tasks that you will be using when starting to author content. It covers:

  • Getting Started
Detailing the basic sequence of events you need for creating and publishing your first page.
  • Further Actions
Following on with the many other actions you can use when authoring.

AEM has two user interfaces:

All tasks are possible with the Classic UI, but depending on how your instance is configured you might be able to use the Touch-optimized UI as well.

Note

Although the individual steps are straightforward many can be performed with both user interfaces. To provide a clear overview this section uses links to the detailed procedures in the documentation. To help keep this overview in focus, these links will open in a new tab or window.

Overview

This slideshow (click-through) gives a quick visual overview of using AEM to author your first page. Links to details about the individual steps involved are then provided under Getting Started.

Getting Started

These detail the basic sequence of events you need for creating and publishing your first page.

Navigating to the Page Location

The content in your website is held in a tree-structure. To create or edit a page you need to navigate to the location:

Creating a New Page

Before editing, you need to create a new page:

Opening a Page

For many actions, such as editing, you need to open a page:

Editing a Page

Whether your instance already has existing pages or you have just created a new page yourself you can:

Note

In 5.6.1 page authoring with the touch-optimized UI is available, but it is preview technology only.

It should not be used for production instances and should not be used at the same time as the classic UI as conflicts can occur.

Publishing a Page

Once you have finished editing your page you will want to publish (or activate) your content so that it is available to visitors on your website:

Further Actions

After the basic steps there are many other actions you can use when authoring.

Copying a Page

It is sometimes easier to copy a page and re-use the content rather than creating everything from scratch again:

Moving or Renaming a Page

Moving and renaming pages is basically done with the same action:

Deactivating a Page

To remove the content from your public website you deactivate or unpublish the page:

Deleting a Page

If a page is no longer needed you might want to delete it:

Setting the Page Properties

Every page has properties that you can define to determine aspects of its operation:

Creating a Version of a Page

You can create a version of a page, then revert to that if necessary:

    The documentation is very clear.
Please mention about roll out option in the side kick. Also the meaning of Publishing. Before publishing, I am able to access my page through Vanity Url. So what is the real meaning of Publishing?

Thank you for your feedback. As this is a first steps page it does not hold all detailed information. You might find the following pages interesting:
